A Month with the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.0i 16V 5dr

When I first got behind the wheel of this SUV, I had a strange mix of feelings. On the one hand, it looked like a classic late-90s compact off-roader – boxy, honest, with no fancy design touches. On the other hand, it immediately inspired confidence, almost as if it was saying: “I’m built to take you anywhere – city, highway, dirt road – and I won’t let you down.” After a month of driving it every day, I can say this is more than just a car. It’s a true companion for all kinds of roads and moods.

Exterior and First Impressions

The styling is simple and a little rugged. Square lines, flat surfaces, no unnecessary ornaments. It’s not flashy in a parking lot, but it doesn’t disappear into the background either. That’s the charm – a straightforward, no-nonsense design. When you look at it, you don’t think about fashion. You think about dependability.

During the first week I noticed something interesting: on the highway, other drivers seemed to respect it. They didn’t tailgate or cut in aggressively. It was as if they instinctively recognized it as a capable machine that takes its time but gets the job done.

Interior and Comfort

Step inside, and the practicality continues. Materials are simple – plenty of hard plastics – but it all feels well put together. No rattles, no squeaks, nothing out of place. The driving position is high, and the view over traffic is excellent. Ergonomics are straightforward; every switch and control is exactly where you’d expect it to be.

Space is decent. Up front, even tall passengers will be comfortable. In the back, three adults fit, though shoulder room is a bit tight. The trunk holds about 398 liters, which is more than enough for groceries or luggage, and if you fold down the rear seats it turns into a surprisingly large cargo area.

Engine and Technical Specs

Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated four-cylinder with a displacement of 1,995 cm³, producing 128 horsepower. It’s paired with a manual transmission, and together they make for a very predictable, reliable driving experience. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes around 11.5 seconds – not fast, but adequate for everyday use.

Fuel consumption over the month averaged 9–10 l/100 km. On the open road, driving calmly, I could manage closer to 8 liters. In city traffic, with stops and starts, it crept up to 12. At idle it burns about 0.8 l/hour. Oil capacity is 4.3 liters, so maintenance is straightforward and affordable.

Driving Experience

On asphalt, the car feels steady, though the tall body means you’ll notice some roll in corners. It’s never scary, just a reminder that this is a practical SUV, not a sports car. Off-road is where it shines. Engage the four-wheel drive, and it will happily climb, crawl, and power through conditions that would stop most crossovers. Muddy tracks, wet grass, rutted dirt roads – all handled without drama.

The ground clearance of around 200 mm makes a big difference. I took it down unpaved roads a couple of times where regular sedans would have bottomed out. The Grand Vitara just carried on, as if nothing unusual was happening.

Dimensions and Weight

  • Length: 4,060 mm
  • Width: 1,780 mm
  • Height: 1,695 mm
  • Weight: about 1,400 kg

It’s compact enough to be city-friendly, yet big enough to feel substantial on the highway. The weight gives it a solid presence, but it never feels sluggish.

Life with It for a Month

I tested it everywhere – in urban traffic, on long motorway trips, and on country backroads. In the city, I loved the commanding driving position and the way it shrugged off potholes and speed bumps. On the motorway, it cruised steadily, with just enough power for confident overtaking. And out in the countryside, it became something else entirely: a true off-roader. I’ll never forget one rainy weekend when the dirt road to a cottage turned into a muddy mess. Cars were turning back. I engaged 4WD and drove through calmly. That was the moment I realized how capable it really is.

Conclusion

After a month, the verdict is clear. This is not a car about glamour or speed. It’s about reliability, practicality, and honesty. Sure, it drinks a bit more fuel than newer crossovers, and the interior won’t impress luxury-seekers. But it gives you confidence on every road, every trip. It’s a car that won’t let you down – and that, to me, is its greatest strength.
